In the heart of Britomart, on the corner of Galway and Commerce Street, you’ll find Xuxu Dumpling Bar. Either step inside or grab a seat in the courtyard to start your night right.
Xuxu has got to be one of my favourite places in the whole of Auckland. The atmosphere is both intimate and cosy while being relaxed and causal.
If I’m ever in the city, you’ll probably find me investing 45 minutes to chow down on their amazing dumpling, pared with an A grade wine from their carefully selected list.
While the menu may appear basic, consisting more or less of 8 different dumplings, the flavours they boast are anything but. Everything is delicious and jam packed full of ever-changing flavours. This is one of the things I love most about Xuxu; the dumplings are forever changings and never quite the same. While some may dislike the lack of consistency, I love not knowing what to expect - with the one exception being that they’re always delicious.
Their wine list is similar in the sense that it’s always changing. Sometimes it’s easy to fall into a routine when selecting wine. I know I sometimes find myself selecting the ‘safe’ option when reading though a wine list. However, when the menu is ever-changing it encourages you to step out of your comfort zone and try something different and new – and trust me, all the wines are more than drinkable.
When it comes to Xuxu, there is one important thing to note – you’re there for a good time not a long time. This makes Xuxu the perfect place to start your night with a quick drink or bite to eat before heading off to discover what else Auckland City has to offer. With such a quick turn over, you won’t normally have to wait more than 10 – 15 minutes for a table, making it the perfect spot to hit up before a concert or for a short after-work drink.
