Red Wine Hot Chocolate

Sometimes, you just need to indulge.

If you’re feeling like something a little bit special, you need to give this red wine hot chocolate a go. It’s both rich and velvety with a little bit of a kick.

If you’re having friend’s over for dinner, you could try replacing dessert with a demitasse of this – an almost effortless way to impress and it only takes 15 minutes.

I personally love snuggling up on the couch with Adam, popcorn, a movie and a mug of this – a great way to make a lazy date-night in, a little bit special.

Red Wine Hot Chocolate

Servings 2 large or 4 small cups
Cook time 15 minutes

250ml whole milk (I love using Lewis Road for this recipe)
125gms dark chocolate (I use
Whittakers 72% or 77%)
125ml red wine (Shiraz or like wine is best)

Place a pot on the stove and add the milk. Turn the heat onto low – if at any point the milk starts to boil, turn the heat down or remove the pot from the heat entirely. The milk must not boil.

While the milk is starting to heat up, break the chocolate into small pieces and add to the pot.

With a small whisk, slowly start to stir the milk and chocolate continuously. As the chocolate melts with the milk, change the stirring motion to a whisking one. Once the chocolate has fully melted, continue to whisk together for another 3-5 minutes. This helps pack air into the milk and create a smooth, velvety consistency.

Next, pour in the red wine and continue to whisk for a further 3-5 minutes. This will cook off some of the alcohol and continue to create a smooth velvety consistency.

Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and enjoy.
